This beautiful Navajo tie bolo in sterling silver is adorned with traditional symbols created using the Overlay technique. These motifs convey messages of hope: a rain cloud, a prayer stick, a parrot and a ray of sunshine. They embody the idea of overcoming hardship, of rediscovering light after dark times. Clouds and rain also represent prosperous crops.

Overlay is a jewelry technique in which two flat pieces of the same size are placed one on top of the other. The top piece is cut with a pattern and acts as a “stencil”. This is applied to the bottom piece, creating a silver background. This background is oxidized and scratched to create contrast between the two pieces.
