Navajo belt buckle in sterling silver and onyx cabochons.
This belt buckle is made using the overlay technique. This ancestral process, created by the Hopi, is used here by a Navajo artist: two flat pieces of the same size are nested one on top of the other. The top piece is hand-carved of one or several pattern, thus acting as a "stencil". It is applied to the bottom piece, creating a silver background. This background is oxidized to create contrast between the two pieces.
In the center of the belt buckle, the artist has set nine small onyx cabochons. The result is a beautiful contrast between the shiny silver, the matte oxidation and the black onyx.
