Stunning Navajo earring set with Heishi beads in Carico Lake turquoise (Nevada), purple and orange spondylus and mat round and saucer silver beads.
The spondylus (also called "spiny oyster") is a shell which has the particularity to be declined in beautiful orange, red or even purple colors. We have these three examples here.
As for the manufacture of Heishi pearls, it's a long and meticulous process: the turquoise is first cut, then pierced and strung on a wire, then the artist grinds this strand on a grinding wheel to form tubular pearls. The quality of genuine Heishi pearls can be recognized by their uniformity and smoothness to the touch.
