Zuni fetish earrings

Bear carved in mother-of-pearl with the details of his face and paws inlaid in Sleeping Beauty (Arizona) jet and turquoise.

One of its blanks features a Sunface inlaid with mother-of-pearl, jet, Sleeping Beauty turquoise and coral. Sunface is the Sun God, symbol of life and omnipresent in Zuni culture. 

The bear is a symbol of strength, health and knowledge. 

In the days when the Zuni lived by farming and hunting, fetishes (amulets) were indispensable to hunters, who never failed to take them with them on their expeditions. Fetishes ensure the benevolence of the soul. Each animal represents its own spirit, its own inner strength, and protects the wearer.
